More Trouble on Bourbon Street?

Bourbon StreetA few weeks ago I mentioned the dancer from Visions Men’s Club who assaulted and robbed a customer who had paid her for sex OTC. In the past couple of months, two Bourbon Street strippers, one from Stiletto’s and one from Temptations, were brutally murdered.

I’m sure everyone has heard of Jaren Lockhart by now. She was the 22-year-old dancer at Temptations who was kidnapped, murdered, and dismembered by a former employee of Stiletto’s, a strip club that is owned by the same company as Temptations and where Jaren worked previously. From NOLA.com:

After finding a decapitated head lying on the beach Saturday morning in Harrison County, Mississippi officials were able to positively confirm the identity of the female torso that washed up Thursday in neighboring Hancock County as belonging to 22-year-old Jaren Lockhart of New Orleans. Also found on Saturday were three pieces of Lockhart’s legs, said Don Bass, chief deputy for the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.

The primary suspect in the crime, Terry Speaks, allegedly a former bouncer/doorman at Stiletto’s, was a registered sex offender in North Carolina and had convictions of statutory rape, assaulting a woman and domestic violence. It’s shocking that Stiletto’s failed to run a simple background check on security if it’s true that he worked at Stiletto’s. The Times-Picayune confirmed Speaks was last employed at My Bar, located at 635 Bourbon Street, as a bouncer. According to another dancer at Stiletto’s, Speaks and his girlfriend stopped at Stiletto’s the same night they abducted Lockhart:

Sheila Nand, a dancer at Stilettos, which is next to Temptations, said the couple stopped into her club the same night Lockhart disappeared.

Sanchez approached Nand as she danced on the club’s stage, tipped her and asked if she would leave the club to join her and Speaks. Sanchez told Nand she looked like another girl that she had previously taken home, according to Nand.

“She looked at me kind of goo-goo eyed … and asked me if I would go home with her,” Nand said. “I want a treat for him,” Nand said Sanchez told her.

Nand said she declined the offer but spoke with the couple after she was done dancing. Speaks, whom she recognized as a doorman from nearby businesses, said hello but remained largely silent, Nand said.

Sanchez then changed her request, Nand said, asking the dancer to leave the club with the couple to “work” a small gathering somewhere in the city for $700. Again, Nand said, she declined.

“She was very persistent,” Nand said of Sanchez. “It was very strange. There was something very hungry and desperate in her eyes. She wouldn’t leave me alone. She wouldn’t let me go.”

A few months before Jaren was murdered, another dancer from Stiletto’s, Hillary Moulder, was found dead in her apartment in New Orleans. It was reported that Moulder also worked at Temptations. But that’s all that was reported. The result of Moulder’s death remains unclear (or unreported). This is all that I could find on Hillary.

Angela Ball is another Bourbon Street dancer found dead in an abandoned City Hall annex on Canal Street a few years prior. Authorities initially rule her death as a suicide, but family members have expressed their doubts. Many think she’s another murder victim. You can read all about Angela here. The article said Ball worked at Larry Flynt’s Hustler Club and Lipstixx, among other Bourbon Street strip clubs. Ball eventually started turning favors OTC, which got her fired from Hustler Club.

I’m not one of the many conspiracy theorists online who will try to link these murders to the work of some psychopathic serial killer. I’m not concerned about that. Tourists – remember to stay safe. Keep your guard up at all times when on Bourbon. There are plenty of con artists and pick pockets on Bourbon. I know because I see it all of the time. Generally you won’t find trouble unless you’re looking for it, but be aware of your surroundings anyway. Stay on or near Bourbon (there’s tons of foot traffic and police). And if someone seems like a creep, they could be.

And if anyone is wondering why strippers are so insistent on keeping their dancing and personal lives separate, now you know why. Too many strippers have gotten burned getting to know customers at strip clubs.
